The Hermitage numismatic collection is enormous. It includes banknotes, medals, decorations, orders, seals and coins. The total number of pieces exceeds one million, over a third of the number of items in the museum overall, and the collection has long been famous amongst specialists all over the world. The major part of the collection consists of coins: ancient (over 130,000 pieces), oriental (over 230,000), Russian (over 250,000) and Western European (over 300,000).
